Passing Through the World - ALWAYS ON THE WAY
Four years of building and 4.4 billion RMB later, Beijing's City Sub-Center has finally thrown open its three great cultural halls — the "Cultural Granary" Beijing Arts Center, the "Forest Bookstore" Beijing City Library, and the "Canal Boat" Grand Canal Museum of Beijing. Fresh landmarks, well worth the trip; here's how to plan yours.
Beijing Arts Center
We started at the Beijing Arts Center, where the inaugural production was the NCPA's own folk opera "Canal Ballad." Under conductor Lu Jia, the NCPA Orchestra and Chorus joined the Tianjin Conservatory of Music Youth Chorus to stage a tale spun along the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal — the joys and heartbreaks of the people who lived by its water. A moving night out, and one the whole family could share.
Alongside it, the opening art week ran right through the New Year holiday. You could book the NCPA's suspense drama "Suspect Holmes," the New Year Concert, and the Chinese National Orchestra's New Year Concert, plus art salons, impromptu performances in the public spaces, and film screenings. If you're going soon, grab performance tickets early.
These days the Arts Center stages some 300 shows a year — reason enough to plan a trip around the program.
Opening Information
The Arts Center has welcomed visitors since opening day. Entry is free but ticketed, Tuesday through Sunday, 10:00-17:00.
Beijing City Library
This library won me over completely. As its own introduction puts it, you wander through mountains of books and read as you please — in other words, paradise for anyone who loves a page.
The whole place is airy and flooded with light; winter sun pours through the tall glass and makes reading feel like the only thing worth doing. I could have moved in. There's even an unmanned "24-Hour Library" tucked inside — the devoted reader's last refuge.
Forest Bookstore spills across the first three floors, its walkways named for the seasons — "Spring Paper Path, Summer Ink Path, Autumn Brush Path, Winter Stone Path" — each one a small poem. The core hall lends world culture and travel, law, the natural and social sciences, plus reference books, Chinese periodicals, and foreign-language literature.
Three-Dimensional Book Storage holds 7.15 million volumes — the largest smart book repository in China. A title is found and fetched within fifteen minutes, then rolled to your table by robot. Clever, and quietly convenient.
In the Metaverse Experience Pavilion, the mood tilts full cyberpunk.
Opening Information
The library is open to all. Get an electronic joint reader card, or a physical one at the desk with your ID, and you can borrow on the spot — for up to 42 days.
Grand Canal Museum of Beijing
At 14:30 on the 27th, the "Canal Boat" Grand Canal Museum of Beijing — the east wing of the Capital Museum — lit its "ancient-charm sails" and opened its doors.
Four Types of Exhibitions
The shows circle the bond between the Grand Canal and Beijing, threading people, water, and city through every hall.
Basic exhibition: "Jinghua Tonghui, Canal Yongji — Historical and Cultural Exhibition of Beijing and the Grand Canal." Special exhibitions: "Grand Canal of Beijing Panorama Scroll" and "More Than the Canal — Immersive Experience Exhibition." Temporary exhibitions: "Beijing Fine Art Academy Collection Bird-and-Flower Painting Masterpieces" and "Beijing City Sub-Center Construction and Development Image Exhibition." Open displays: the "Stone Sculpture Garden Display Area," the "Museum Earthquake Protection Science Exhibition," the "Public Art Platform," and more.
The museum is vast, and our legs gave out after the basic exhibition alone. Four big events round it out: the "Voice of the Canal" Quyi Show, the "Star of the Canal" Creative Hub, and "Theater at the Canal" Performance Week.
Opening Information
The Grand Canal Museum keeps long hours — daily 10:00-20:00, closed Mondays.

Route Navigation
By public transit, set your destination to "Shangmatou Road Station"; Bus 317 gets you there. Driving, navigate to the City Green Heart Forest Park P12 lot and follow the signs to the museum.
